December 2, 2005, Newsletter Issue #9: Do Discount Health Cards Save Money?

Tip of the Week

Discount health cards are designed to offer consumers discounts on specific health care services through participating providers. While you can benefit from some savings on your medical expenses, here are 4 important things to remember before you buy:

1. Discount health cards are a discount plan, not health insurance. While some of your services may be discounted, you’ll have to pay the remaining balance in full at the time of your visit.

2. Be careful when choosing a discount health card. Get a list of participating providers and discounted services to make sure they match your needs.

3. Call up the providers on the list and get a confirmation from them that they’re still actively participating and offering discounts.

4. Don’t hand over your credit card number until you are certain you are dealing with an upfront business – there’s a lot of discount card scammers out there!
