January 27, 2006, Newsletter Issue #17: Choose The Best Doctor

Tip of the Week

Many managed health insurance plans require you to select just one doctor to be your “primary care physician”, or PCP. This is the doctor you will see for all your care and the one that will be responsible for referring you to any specialists that are necessary. It’s important you select a doctor that you are comfortable communicating with and one that has a good understanding of your needs. Even if your health plan doesn’t require you to select a PCP, it’s important that you build a strong relationship with your doctor.

Doctor-finding tips:

Check with your friends, relatives and co-workers for names of doctors they’ve been satisfied with.

If you are selecting a PCP, always check with your health plan first for a list of doctors participating in your network.

Contact the Medical Licensing Board in your state. They can tell you if a doctor has had any complaints made against them or if they have been disciplined.
